Awakening is a large flowered Climber that is classified as a Hybrid Wichurana. It is a good climber for our cold Indiana winters. Awakening is typically purchased own root. That means that the rose plant is not grafted onto a root stock and the roots belong to the same rose as the new growth. Awakening is quite thorny and has great sprawling canes that are perfect for tying onto an arbor or training onto a pillar. It is also very disease tolerant and resistant. Awakening is shade tolerant and can be trained on a tree, but in Indiana Zone 5 it blooms more profusely if given the 6-8 hours of full sun required by most roses. It also prefers to bloom on old wood so only prune away dead or damaged canes leaving as many strong healthy canes from the previous year as possible.

Awakening is a sport of the Large Flowered Climber New Dawn. Awakening and New Dawn are only has different as their petal count of the blooms. Its growth habit and bloom color are identical. New Dawn also has another sport that is a white clone, named appropriately, White New Dawn. It is identical in every way to New Dawn except for the Bloom Color is white instead of the Light Pink of it's mother and sister sport Awakening.
